it rains in the city
pretty colours
yellow
green
pink
tiny sweet things
that fall
little marshmallows
but soon
the children grow sick
weary of devouring them
they long for honest rain
to quench a thirst
that grows
the adults grow fearful
there is no more space
for the marshmallows
they pile into great drifts
blocking doorways
concealing windows
they find the old ones trapped
and dead
the young ones cry out
they fear for themselves
the future
and what a pretty future it will be:
completely yellow
green
and pink
